Regarding the acquisition:
Know the characteristics of the breed you wish to acquire and only
acquire a dog from the breed if these characteristics are compatible
with your lifestyle.
Acquire the dog only from reputable breeders, when opting for a
pedigree dog.
Ensure the good health of a new dog before "introducing" it to the
DOGS you already own.
Do not expose a new dog to an environment where a dog carrying an
infectious-contagious disease (e.g. Parvovirus, Canine distemper)
has lived, before the minimum time and care has been taken to
disinfect the environment.
As for the walks:
Transport the dog in a safe manner
during walks and car journeys.
Do not keep the dog inside a closed car, especially when it is
parked under the sun.
Lead the dog on the lead during walks.
More than avoiding an attack by your dog, you will prevent it from
being injured when crossing a street improperly or attacked by other
DOGS.
Collect the dirt that the dog "produces" on public roads.
Take responsibility for any possible transgression of the dog, (take
out liability insurance).
General
care:
Educate the dog,
with basic training, using techniques that do not increase the dog's
natural aggressiveness (guard breeds) or mistreat it.
Keep your dog safe, preventing it from escaping or being attacked by
street DOGS or vicious people.
Keep the dog vaccinated and vermifugated, following the vet's
instructions.
Feed the dog with good quality food and preserved properly. If
homemade food is chosen, make sure the dog receives all the
necessary nutrients.
Keep clean, fresh water available for your dog at all times.
Do not allow the dog to be exposed to excessive heat or cold.
Provide a place protected from rain and sun when outside.
Spay/sterilise your dog or ensure it does not breed in case of
genetically transmitted diseases.
